Who we are

The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) is a transformational initiative that enables Australian research community and industry access to nationally significant, leading edge data intensive eInfrastructure, platforms, skills and collections of high-quality data.

In partnerships with organisations, we will lead facilitations that work towards a coherent research environment to enable researchers to find, access, contribute to and effectively use services to maximise research quality and impact.

Our history

The ARDC was formed on 1 July 2018. Nearly one year on, the ARDC is now a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity with ACNC. We are engaging with publicly funded research agencies, universities and eResearch capabilities on becoming members of the ARDC. View our current members.

As a new initiative, our history is short. However, we bring to the eResearch sector over 10 years of experience on research data infrastructure and services. This is achieved by building on legacy initiatives such as the Australian National Data Service (ANDS), National eResearch Collaboration Tools and Resources (Nectar) and the Research Data Services (RDS).

We will continue to provide services that researchers and the eResearch community can rely on to create better research data outputs.

Our vision is to transform digital infrastructure to support leading edge research and innovation.

Our principles define us

Transforming research through better tools, by providing better software, platforms and data across the research lifecycle.

Building strong partnerships and collaborations are at the heart of everything that we do. As one part of a national and international system, we work with others to inform, magnify and sustain common work objectives.

Focusing on national scale opportunities to help develop a nationally coherent eResearch infrastructure environment in a global context.

Be a catalyst for and complement the sector by accelerating innovation through projects, infrastructure, services, consultancy and outreach.

People are essential and we will continue to raise awareness of this and support communities in order to build skills and culture in the sector.

Commitment to sustainable expertise and services, digital infrastructure for data and tools.

Our Mission

The ARDC is a transformational, sector-wide initiative, working with sector, government, and industry partners to build a coherent national and collaborative research data commons. This will deliver a world-leading data advantage, facilitate innovation, foster collaboration and enhance research translation.
